After a successful but soggy round at Silverstone, Pall-Ex’s Sales and Marketing Director, Mark Steel was looking forward to a points-finish on his home track.
After a lack of testing time due to work commitments, Mark went into the Volkswagen Racing Cup qualifying stages looking to develop his knowledge of the circuit in his MK7 Golf.
Qualifying 13th, Mark reflected on his afternoon at Donington Park.
“I’m disappointed to not be higher up the grid after qualifying. Testing is paramount to a good finish and unfortunately, I just didn’t have the ability to get on the track this week.
“I’ll take what I have learnt in qualifying and put it into the race later.”
Mark got into his Staples sponsored Golf later that afternoon for Race One, with more knowledge on the course he ended the race in 11th.
“Today has been really educational for me and I am confident that I can push up the grid tomorrow.”
Sunday proved to be another sunny day and Mark knew he needed to pull it out the bag to get a points-finish.
Needing better pace, Mark pushed the MK7 around the Midlands track shaving valuable time off each lap. Unfortunately, he couldn’t quite get involved with the mid-field competition and ended up finishing the race in 10th.
“Although not as successful as my last outing at Silverstone, the whole weekend has been a learning curve. By the end of Race Two, I was only two seconds off the winner’s best lap-time.”
I’m learning every weekend and I cannot thank the Slidesports team and my sponsors enough for letting me be a part of the Volkswagen Racing Cup.
Mark is sitting 11th as the cup heads to Croft in two weeks’ time. You can keep up-to-date with Mark’s results and timings by clicking here.
On Sunday 23rd June, you can also live stream both races on YouTube, so you don’t miss any of the action.
